"Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and makes us members of Christ's Body, the Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God."  1979 Book of Common Prayer, page 858

Thank you for your interest in Holy Baptism at Saint John's Cathedral!

Being baptized is a sacramental act in which we are fully welcomed into the body of Christ and we take baptismal preparation very seriously.  Many people think Baptism is primarily for babies, but that is just not so.  Anyone who truly wishes to renounce evil, repent of sinfulness, and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior is invited to Baptism.

Holy Baptism is administered on specific Sundays during the year, within the context of the service of The Holy Eucharist. As policy there is no provision for separate or private baptisms—emergency baptism being the exception. There is good reason for setting aside specific dates: Several of the Sundays mark major Festivals in the Church year (e.g., The Baptism of Our Lord, Easter-tide, the Day of Pentecost, and All Saints’ Day), when it is especially appropriate to welcome the newly baptized; also the Rite of Holy Baptism requires special integration into our usual Sunday liturgies, and our form of worship is modified to accommodate this.

For children, preparation for Baptism is a two step process that consists of 1) a "Baptism 101" meeting prior to any scheduling of Baptism dates with the child's parents and a member of the Cathedral's clergy staff and 2) a meeting of the child's parents and godparents with our Director of Religious Education, which takes place the Saturday morning prior to Baptism.

For adults, preparation for Baptism is usually combined with preparation for Confirmation - as most adults are baptized and confirmed at the same time, usually on Easter Eve.  Our Catechumenate program prepares adults for Baptism, Confirmation, Reception in the Episcopal Church or Renewal of Baptismal Vows.
