Saint John's Cathedral Choir School

The spiritual, biblical, theological, emotional, and musical formation of children lie at the heart of Saint John's Cathedral Choir School. At SJCCS children have the opportunity to learn that God loves them and that God's love is felt and shared through music. In tandem with the liturgical year, they are exposed to biblical and theological texts that inform their offering and invite them into a deeper understanding of Christ in their lives. In addition, each learns to be a part of a community where they rely upon and are encouraged by each other and where each offers a unique contribution that, finally, serves a greater purpose than could be achieved individually. They learn to deal with shortcomings, failures, growth, and success within a nurturing community that is constantly moving beyond the immediate to something of lasting value. They learn to strive for excellence as children of God.

Through SJCCS's adaptation of a training scheme devised by the Royal School of Church Music, singers are trained to use their voices well and are taught music theory in a graded educational program. Skills not only empower these young people musically, they enhance personal and communal confidence and self esteem. They feel and know that they are valuable.

SAINT DAVID CHOIR INSTRUCTIONS

When The Saint David Choir sings on Sundays on the Processional Hymn: please come to the Music Department to put on your chorister’s purple cassock and line up with the rest of the Choir by 8:50 am.  The Saint David Choir will process with the Choir.  Parents may wait in the “wings” (The Shannon Room and Summers Hall, on either side of the chancel), and collect their child during the Kyrie to go to Children’s Chapel, etc. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO COLLECT YOUR CHILD AT THIS TIME AND PLACE.

When The Saint David Choir sings on Sundays on the Communion Hymn: please come to the Music Department before the 9:00 service to put on your chorister’s purple cassock.  Your chorister should attend the 9:00 service with you; we recommend sitting toward the front of the congregation, so that your chorister can receive communion early.  After receiving communion, please escort your chorister to the choir stalls in the chancel to join the singing of the hymn.  The Saint David Choir will remain with the other Choirs through the remainder of the service and closing procession; please meet them at the front of the church directly after the final hymn.

We encourage you, if possible, to help your child learn their refrains at home – even if it’s just helping them to learn the words.

OTHER GENERAL NOTES FOR CHORISTERS:

Sunday mornings:

On regular Sunday mornings, all C&N Choristers and Probationers are to be vested and in seats for vocal warm up in Room 200 by 8:15 am. Dark shoes are required for all choir members on Sundays. Hair bows are not appropriate for choristers.

Rehearsal Cancellations: If Denver Public Schools are closed on a rehearsal day because of weather or school schedule, the rehearsal on that day is cancelled.

If rehearsals are cancelled for any reason, the choir still sings at regularly scheduled liturgies.

Wednesdays: Godly Play will not be available in the 2017-18 program year.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

If there is no parent present to collect a child at the end of their Wednesday rehearsal, they will be automatically taken to the nursery. Please sign them in ahead.  The nursery is open on Wednesdays from 5pm to 9pm.

Communication:

If you cannot attend a rehearsal or service, please notify the Music Department ahead of time at 303-577-7717 or alberto@sjcathedral.org.

A Chorister's Prayer

Bless, O Lord, us Thy servants who minister in Thy temple. Grant that what we sing with our lips, we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts, we may show forth in our lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
